GLBT Advocacy

The U.S. Congress is considering several important bills to the GLBT community. The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act / Matthew Shepard Act gives the Justice Department the power to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence by providing the department with jurisdiction over crimes of violence where the perpetrator has selected the victim because of the person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. The Uniting American Families Act would allow allow U.S. citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their same-sex partners for family-based immigration.

The Texas Legislature is meeting through the month of May, and they will consider several bills of interest to the GLBT community. Equality Texas has a bill tracker that allows you to see what bills have been filed, their status, and how you can advocate.

The Center for Psychosocial Health at the University of North Texas' Project Health survey is designed to examine various health behaviors and psychosocial issues in the LGBT community. We are assessing factors such as social support, stress, and coping to gain a better understanding of the diverse LGBT communities.  Our research will also identify the basic healthcare needs for the different LGBT communities and potential barriers that may be deterring individuals from obtaining optimal care.  After finishing a roughly two-hour computerized survey, you will receive $25 cash.  In order to receive your compensation, we need to know where you would like to take the survey.  We have three locations:  in Dallas at the Resource Center on Reagan St., on UNT campus in Terrill Hall, room 284 (1611 W. Mulberry Street), and the UNT Health Science Center campus in Ft. Worth.  If you would like to participate in this research project and receive $25 cash, please e-mail us at cphprojecthealth@gmail.com, let us know which location you prefer, and your full availability so that we may schedule you at the earliest convenience.

In the wake of one of the most violent years on record of assaults on transgender people, the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force have teamed up on a comprehensive national survey to collect data on discrimination against transgender people in housing, employment, public accommodations, healthcare, education, family life and criminal justice. Click here to take the survey.
