Phil Johnson Historic Archives & Research Library

The Phil Johnson Historic Archives & Research Library is the largest gay and lesbian literary collection in north Texas. Established in 1994 and named in honor of longtime Dallas activist Phil Johnson, the library includes over 7,000 book titles, a wide selection of DVD and VHS movies, music CDs, and magazines all focusing on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) and HIV/AIDS topics.  The library also has access to consumer health information through Medline and other databases and is a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

Professional librarians are available to assist you with book recommendations and with your research needs

The Library includes the David Bohnett Cyber Center, which offers eight public computers with Internet access and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.

USING THE LIBRARY

The Library is open to the public. A valid ID is required to obtain a library card and access services. Items have a two-week loan period and may be renewed. Effective Oct. 1, 2009, library cards are $5 per year.

HOURS: The Library and Cyber Center are open to the public Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 12:30 to 4 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday.

CHECKING OUT MATERIALS: A valid ID is required to obtain a library card. All items have a two-week loan period and may be renewed. Effective October 1, 2009, library cards are $5 per year.

ONLINE CATALOG: Our online catalog can be searched from the Internet. You can search the catalog by keyword, title, author, subject, or ISBN.

SUPPORTING THE LIBRARY

ONGOING BOOK SALE: The Library holds an ongoing sale of books, movies, and CDs at bargain prices. Money earned from the sale of books is used to purchase new materials needed for our collection. Stop by during Library hours to browse our book sale.

VOLUNTEERING: Volunteers with computer skills (especially MS Word and Excel) are particularly needed to assist in the organization of the Library including arranging our archives and collections, updating our online database, conducting oral histories and other special projects. If you can donate your time, please contact the Library at 214-540-4451.

DONATING: The Library depends on donations to expand our collection. As part of the Resource Center of Dallas, we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

* The institutional subscription rate quoted above includes free online access to abstracts and articles.
